’Roo roast soon for Queensland barbies?
NZPA-AAP Brisbane Roast ’roo may soon grace Australian dinner tables and restaurant menus.
The Queensland Government is supporting a $7O million-a-year proposal for farmers to harvest kangaroos, according to the “Sunday Mail.”
The plan, certain to enrage conservation groups, was put forward by the National Party’s environ-
ment and conservation committee. According to a committee member and Chincilia grazier, Chris Cameron, the proposal is for the treatment of kangaroos as livestock to facilitate easy harvesting whenever they are in sufficient numbers. Under the present quota system, farmers are. allowed to kill a certain number of kangaroos but are not permitted to use
the skins or the meat, which Mr Cameron describes as disgraceful. The proposal has the full support of the Conservation Minister, Geoff Muntz. “Queensland has always supported the use of as much kangaroo product as possible. The proposition to treat kangaroos as livestock is not without considerable merit,” Mr Muntz said.
