Twenty-six delegates from nine countries will be in Christchurch next week for the Seventh International Conference of Chief Executives in Local Government. It is the first time the conference will be held in the Southern Hemisphere. The conference, held about every 18 months, is under the auspices of the O.E.C.D. The chief executives of local authorities in Spain, the Netherlands, Scotland, England, the United States, Australia, Canada, West Germany and New Zealand will debate the theme, “City Hall and the

Local Economy.”

The format for the conference is small workshop groups. The Key address will be given at Christchurch Town Hall next Thursday morning by the Deputy Prime Minister, Mr Palmer.

Mr Palmer’s speech will deal with restructuring in the country in relation to the public sector and local government. Other topics for discussion are case studies of various cities and local authority functions including the Canterbury Development Corporation.

The conference will run from January 27 to 31.
