Detained leader resigns

NZPA-Reuter Kuala Lumpur The secretary-general of Malaysia’s main opposition party, who is detained under a law allowing detention without trial, has resigned.

A statement released by the Democratic Action Party said Lim Kit Siang had written to the party’s national chairman, Chen Man Hin, to offer his resignation under a law prohibiting a detained person from remaining as office-bearer of a registered society. In the letter to Mr Chen published in the statement, Mr Lim described the law as draconian.

The law gave the authorities “the unfettered powers to remove opposition political leaders from political party posts by the expedient of issuing detention or restriction orders on capricious and arbitrary grounds,” Mr Lim said. The police detained over 100 people under Malaysia’s Internal Security Act in a massive security crackdown in October. The Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Mahathir Mohamad, said the crackdown was aimed at avoiding riots between Malays and ethnic Chinese.
