Replacing players ‘difficult’

PA Hamilton . Replacing players of quality and experience was very difficult, the England cricket team manager, Micky Stewart, said yesterday on the eve of the second tour match against Northern Districts. He was looking past the Hamilton match to the bicentenary test against Australia in Sydney at the end of the coming week and beyond that to the series against New Zealand. He said the game with Northern Districts and the selection of the side for it would be geared toward the bicentenary test. It appeared, he said, the fast bowler Phillip DeFreitas would be out of consideration. He "tweaked” an achilles tendon and could not bowl at practice yesterday afternoon, though he batted. Mr Stewart said the calls on top players became even more demanding than ever in recent months when England had the World Cup competition and a tour of Pakistan before travelling south to face its commitments in New Zealand and Australia.
