Airways jobs will go in review

PA Wellington Considerable redundancies will come over the next few months as the Airways Corporation reviews its operations, says the chief executive, Frank Baldwin. One of the smallest of the State owned enterprises, the corporation, employing 1103, was formed from the operational side of the Ministry of Transport’s civil aviation division. The review of Airways’ operations has been done by what Mr Baldwin calls “wedging” — taking each sector of operations out of the whole, and asking if it can be done better. “Regrettably, there will be considerable redundancies, which will become apparent in the next

two or three months.” The review of staff levels would be a continuing process, he said. Opening up to competition of crash fire services at New Zealand airports was one example. Traditionally a civil aviation monopoly, crash fire services are now the responsibility of the individual airport licencees. In an effort to get value for money, they have put the provision of the services up for tender. Putting together the’ corporation’s new billing system had been a difficult exercise. One com r i plete system was scrapped after adverse reaction from airlines. The new system will begin on April 1, a year after the corporation’s taking over.
