Robinson earns first placing

Linda Robinson (Wharenui), after filling the bridesmaid's role for the first, two sessions of the Canterbury swimming championships, earned herself a first placing in the girls 15, 16 and 17 years 100 m freestyle at Queen Elizabeth II Park last evening. At finals on the previous two evenings, Robinson was beaten for the gold medals in her age group by her clubmate, Phillippa Langrell, and Anna Simcic (Avon), but in the last event last evening Robinson edged ahead of her rivals to win the gold medal. It was a close race however. Robinson and Langrell were credited with the same time — Imin 0.84 s — with Simcic less than a second behind. Earlier Simcic won the girls 15, 16 and 17 years’ 200 m backstroke in 2min 22.095, slightly outside her best, but good enough to head Robinson and Langrell comfortably. Michael Bouwmeester (Wharenui) won one of the prestige events of the championships — the open men’s 100 m freestyle. His time was a commendable 54.925, and he had to fight hard to hold off the runner-up, Andrew Hamilton (Avon), who swam 55.785. Grant Forbes (Christchurch) who returned this week from a torrid circuit of swimming in Australia won the men’s 200 m breaststroke, but his time, 2min 34.51 s was mediocre. Kirstyn Ellis (Wharenui), who won the girls' 13 and 14 years 200 m freestyle recorded an excellent time, 2min 14.21 s and she was chased home by her clubmate Sarah Harrow. Fleur Pollitt (New Brighton) was a comfortable winner of the women’ open 100 m freestyle in ljmn 2.795.
