Obituary Mr M. Hargreaves

PA Dunedin A Dunedin .trade unionist who always strived to get the best conditions possible for workers, Mr Malcolm (Mac) Hargreaves, has died in Dunedin, aged 69. Mr Hargreaves was elected Otago district secretary of the New Zealand Engineering Union in 1972, a position he held until his retirement in 1984.

He was a member of the union since he emigrated from England in 1965 and was a national councillor for nearly four years. Mr Hargreaves is credited with convincing the Government' and the Agriculture Department to pay 100 per cent compensation to workers who contracted brucellosis through working with infected cattle. The compensation replaced the traditional 80 per cent payment to workers gazetted with having the disease.
