AUSTRALIA B.H.P. in the limelight

NZPA-AAP Sydney The Australian sharemarket closed barely steady yesterday, following a similar result on Wall Street overnight, with activity focused on the major players involved in the BHP restructure. Brokers said a 0.1 point fall in the Dow Jones to 1879.3 kept local investors cautious as they selectively bought blue chip industrials in preference to gold and resource stocks. At the close the all ordinaries was 0.9 points up at 1277.5. The industrial index gained 8.7 to 2002.2 but the all resources fell 4.2 to 725 and the gold index lost 7.8 to 1833.9. National turnover was a solid 185.79 M shares worth sAustl4B.43 million. Falls narrowly outnumbered rises. “Our market remains tied to Wall Street and the four day weekend helped keep

traders cautious,” one broker said. "The highlight of today’s trade was the situation surrounding market leader B.H.P. I thought the stock performed well ... I thought it would be weaker. I think there’s still a great deal of confusion about what the restructure means for 8.H.P.” B.H.P. lost 18c on the day to 662 c after recovering from early lows of 640 c and an opening of 644 c. Bell Resources was a big winner, gaining 20c to 160 c, but off a high of 165 c. The stock topped turnover lists with 13.86 M shares worth $22.08 million trading, mostly heading offshore. Bell Group was steady at 178 c after earlier gaining 7c. Elders added 5c to 320 c after reaching a high of 330 c, and Elders Resources gained 2c to 230 c.
