Fox turns to music

The Foxes are looking forward to a quiet holiday on a friend’s “dude ranch” in “Crazy Like a Fox,” on Saturday at 7 p.m. on Two. But the peace is shattered when the sound of a gunshot leads them to a body in the barn, and Harry and Harrison find themselves on the trail of a murder. John Rubenstein, who plays the long-suffering Harrison, is actually trying to fit a music-writ-ing career in between his acting commitments. He has long held ambitions to write musicals for Broadway, but has been so busy with his acting work that his current musical project, called “Orphan Train,” keeps getting delayed. As a result of his frustrations, a piano was installed in the motorhome he uses as a dressing room during shooting scenes for “Crazy Like a Fox.” With the renewal of

“Crazy Like a Fox” for a second season, he had to do something to hasten work on the show. “After working all day, I was too tired to write at night, but during a normal shooting day, there are lots of opportunities to work between scenes and while going to and from location. The ideal situation was to have a piano with me in my dressing room so that Alan and I could work every day.” While filming on location in San Francisco, John and Alan were crossing the Golden Gate bridge when the two thought it would be appropriate to play some familiar local tunes. "Pedestrians walking across the bridge,” laughs John, “were a little startled to suddenly hear such tunes as ‘I Left My Heart In San Francisco,’ ‘Grant Street,’ and ‘San Francisco,’ coming from the back of a motor home.”
