Armed youth surrenders

By

NEIL CLARKSON

A youth, aged 15, was referred to the Social Welfare Department after a firearms incident in the Akaroa area yesterday. Senior-Sergeant Chris Cole said the youth had caused relatives concern when he left an Akaroa house about 11 p.m. on Thursday with a .22 calibre rifle.

Later in the evening, four shots were heard in the Le Bons Bay area. Relatives searched for the youth without success. Just before 10 a.m. yesterday, a woman walking in Akaroa’s Garden of Tane saw a person with a gun crouching -behind a

bush. The Akaroa constable and a civilian kept people away from the reserve while Christchurch police staff, including members of the armed offenders squad, travelled to Akaroa.

The youth was not seen again until shortly before 3.30 p.m. when he gave himself up to his foster mother.

He later took the police to a spot where the rifle was recovered.

Senior-Sergeant Cole said the police had elected not to lay charges. ' “No person was injured or threatened,” he said.
