Hibbs sets swim record

Sean Hibbs, one of three talented brothers swimming for the New Brighton Club, set a Canterbury record at the second session of the provincial championships at Queen Elizabeth II Park last evening. Swimming in the final of the boys 11 and 12 years 200 m backstroke, Hibbs recorded 2min 26.385, 3.99 s inside the old record established by his older brother, Dallas, two years ago.

Later in the evening, Hibbs, aged 12, added a second title to his haul when he won a tense finish in the 11 and 12 years 100 m breaststroke final. The first three finishers were separated by 0.575.

The best final of the evening was the girls 15, 16 and 17 years 200 m butterfly. Anna

Simcic (Avon Aquatics) who is chasing Olympic qualifying times in the backstroke events, showed her versatility by winning the butterfly race in the impressive time of 2min 21.195. That time is only 5.34 s outside the Seoul qualifying mark. Second and third in the race were the Wharenui clubmates, Linda Robinson and Phillippa Langrell; their times of 2min 22.31 s and 2min 24.62 s were also commendable. Nicola West (Wharenui) was a comfortable winner of the two girls 11 and 12 years titles decided last night, and Olwyn Bruce (Wharenui) swam an excellent 100 m breaststroke to win the girls 15, 16 and 17 years title. Her time, 1 min 16.175, was 0.67 s outside Rickie Binning’s Canterbury record which has

stood for nearly eight years. Robinson, as in the 200 m butterfly, had to be content with the silver medal.
