Governor picks on Asians
NZPA-AFP Phoenhix Controversial Arizona Governor, Evan Mecham, whose insensitive remarks have so angered his state’s women, blacks, Jews and homosexuals that he now faces a recall campaign, may have offended a new group — Asians. He told participants at a Kiwanis Club luncheon here that Japanese golfers “suddenly got round eyes” when told how many golf courses there were in Arizona. “You’d almost think a person would have to work awfully hard to offend that many people with this regularity,” said the Arizona House of Representatives member, Art Hamilton. “I find the idea of disparaging comments about other folks because of their race, colour, creed or in this case, the shape of their eyes, to be an affront to right-think-ing folks.” Phoenix’s honorary Japanese consul general, Tom Kadomoto, declined to comment. The Mecham Recall Committee has turned in almost 400,000 petition signatures, which recorders are now verifying.
