Two pupils on Antarctic visit
Two seventh formers from St Patrick’s College, Wellington, are in Antarctica this week as guests of the D.S.I.R. Miki Szikszai and Jonathan Ingerson won their trip for their exhibit in last year’s Wellington Science Fair. Aged 17, the two are among the youngest New Zealanders to visit Antarctica. Miki and Jonathan are staying at Scott Base and they will also visit the United States McMurdo Station and Arrival Heights, the upper atmosphere research station
nearby. Other trips will take them to New Zealand’s research station in the Dry Valleys, at Lake Vanda, and to Cape Bird, where scientists are studying penguins. Jonathan and Miki won their prize for experiments on the after-images which remain on the retina of the eye.
Jonathan will begin a Bachelor of Science degree at Victoria University this year, majoring in geology, and Miki plans to study for double science and arts degrees.
