Plans to enliven ‘Street’ blocked
Granada Television bosses have squashed plans by “Coronation Street” scriptwriters to bring gays and blacks to fight the rival soapie “East Enders in the ratings war. The writers apparently saw Hilda Ogden’s departure as an opportunity to move a black family or even a couple of gays into her house in the Street. But according to the “Sun” newspaper, Granada chiefs blocked the idea.
A “Coronation Street” insider was quoted as saying: “They are convinced that the success of ‘EastEnders’ is a flash in the pan and bringing gays into the Street would destroy our family-viewing image.”
The 8.8.C.’s “East Enders with its racier plots, has consistently topped “Coronation Street” in the ratings in Britain since it began three years ago. — Tony Verdon
