Jamboree city starts to grow
PA Levin A tent city has begun to grow in Levin in preparation for the 1988 Guide Jamboree which will start next Sunday. More than 3000 guides and 1000 adult leaders and helpers will take up residence on 5 ha of the Levin Showgrounds and the adjoining Horowhenua College playing fields. It will be only the second jamboree of this size to be held in New Zealand and has attracted guides from 10 countries. Among the V.I.P. visitors to the camp will be the world Guide President, Dr Odele Bonte, from France, the wife of
the Governor-General, Lady Reeves, and the Chief Commissioner of Guides, Mrs Joye Evans. The guides will arrive in Levin on Sunday by train, bus and car, and the rail transport will include a 25-carriage monster, 400 m long — the longest passenger train seen in New Zealand.
Helping with the putting up of the main marquees, cooking, and security chores are Army and Air Force personnel. Hundreds of metres of barbed wire have been used on the borders of the camp to keep out unwanted visitors.
