Zealots group formed to warn against smoking

A new anti-tobacco group — Zealots Against Poison or Z.A.P. — has been formed to spread a warning that smoking is addictive and can kill. The group’s founder, Mr Alan Ireland, of Palmerston North, said yesterday the group’s single objective was to “zap” telegraph poles and other places with the

warning. It had been one of several proposed by the Toxic Substances Board, but the only one which would not appear bn cigarette packets from April under the new code for the marketing of cigarettes. The reason it was left out was easy too see, he said.

“It’s the toughest, most truthful warning — the one the tobacco industry hates most of all.

“The industry can live with almost any other warning and, it seems, accepted the other weaker warnings without a fight in exchange for the exclusion of the one it saw as really damaging to its interests.”
