Elderly woman injured

PA New Plymouth A 78-year-old woman was trapped underneath a Land Rover involved in a hit and run accident at Taumarunui on Saturday morning. Firemen called to the 12.20 a.m. accident used lifting equipment to free Mrs Wiri Kira, who was pinned by an arm and a leg when the Land Rover tipped when hit by a stolen car at an intersection.

Mrs Kira was said to be in a satisfactory condition in Taumarunui Hospital yesterday.

The car had been stolen on Friday and it was alleged it did not stop at the intersection, said a police spokesman. It continued after the accident and was later found abandoned.

An arrest was expected, the spokesman said. Five other people in the Land Rover escaped injury.
