Frangelico to repeat success?

By

JEFF SCOTT

Frangelico, a creditable fourth in last Wednesday's Auckland Cup, should repeat her win of last year in tonight’s $50,000 National Bloodstock NZ Breeders’ Stakes at the Canterbury Park meeting at Addington Raceway. The strapping Golden Fulla six-year-old has finished close-up against the open-class entires and geldings in the Hannon Memorial (third), New Zealand Cup (seventh), New Zealand Free-For-All (third, a nose and half a head from Luxury Liner and Lightning Blue), Airport Travelodge Free-For-All (fourth) and Auckland Cup (fourth), in five of her last six outings and should find things appreciably easier in tonight’s first leg of the T.A.B. double. She will be trying to give her Kerrytown trainer-reinsman, Richard Brosnan, his fifth Breeders’ Stakes win in the last seven renewals, having earlier peeled off a hat-trick with the great mare, Bonnie’s Chance, starting his run back in 1982. Frangelico has shown a tendency to get keen in mobile start races this year, pulling and choking in a heat of the Inter-Dominions in March, then pulling noticeably in the New Zealand Free-For-All and Airport Travelodge Free-For-All at the New Zealand Cup meeting, but allowed to stretch out the way she likes to over tonight’s dash, should result in a pretty slick mile.

COUPLANDS PIES MOBILE PACE $7500; C 4 and 5; 2600 m 1 1307 Beau Peer 1 J. Carmichael It Freshened since last racing in November. Could place with peak performance. 3 4979 Super Roux 3 R. Cameron it Seems better suited on the country circuit. 4 0023 Young Eden 4 R. Brosnan It National three-year-old record holder for a filly over this distance (mobile) with 3:16.41 in last term’s NZ Oaks. Fought on after making run 600 m out in fast-run 2000 m race on first night. 5 1121 Carnforth 5 M. de Filippi It Outstayed rivals in NZ Champion Stakes at Ashburton in a 2:3.4 rate for the mobile 2400 m. Sticks better than most. 6 7 Sybil’s Dream 6 R. Asquith It Resumed at Winton last Monday, beating three in fillies and mares mile. 7 12 Dainty Smooth 7 J. Boyd It Game runner-up to Farm Maid in 1:59.2

She had a 1:57.9 mile best with a track record win at Ashburton in February, the second fastest winning mile of the 10 runners tonight behind Gina Rosa’s 1:57.78 at the 1986 New Zealand Cup meeting. Bionic Chance, which tracks out Aran Blaze (second to Frangelico in last year’s Breeders’), is one of New Zealand’s most promising mares, has a 1:58.3 winning record, and should provide Frangelico with her toughest rivalry tonight. Last season’s top three-year-old filly, Victoria Star, is ideally drawn from No. 3 to make things tough for her southern rivals, while Gina Rosa cannot be discarded even from the second line. Michele Bromac, which along with Frangelico are the only open class mares in this year’s field, is a 1:58 winning miler but will need luck from the outside of the second row, while the C 9 mare, Late Lustre, is a 1:58.4 placed miler, but comes into the outside of the front-line. Starwin Boy, a strong-finishing third to Megatrend and Noodlum’s Fella on the first night, could thwart the dominance of the “Noodlum’s” in the second leg of the T.A.B. double, the Firestone Eurosteels Handicap. A four-year-old entire by the defunct Out to Win, Starwin Boy will need to produce a peak run to hold out the Noodlum brigade of Speedy Cheval, Noodlum’s Fella and Revolution rate for 2000 m on first night after leading field through first mile in 1:57.8. 8 1908 Le Marais 8 F. Newfield It Last raced November. Tough one here first-up. 9 0875 Floyd 9 R. Alfeld It Has been battling in this grade for a while now. 12 0300 Margrave 12 A. Butt It No dash since first-up third to Jenny Benny and Nat in Waimate Cup last month. 13 1170 Great Provider 13 G. Laing It Battling across top on first night, stopping to beat only one. Failing to show his earlier potential in two runs back from a let-up. 14 1097 Bright Fella 14 J. Hay It Wilted after leading out, then trailing against Megatrend and company on the first night. 15 0700 Motu Jodi 15 K. Townley It No appeal. 16 1048 Graecol 16 G. O’Reilly It Chances do not look bright from this marble. Scratched: Megatrend, Sir Avon. Jenny Benny. Race 4 T 7.15 BURKES CATERERS PACE $5500; four-year-olds; 2600 m 1 5425 Whitneys Creek 1 P. Jones It Racing fairly and could get some of it. 2 5344 Koau Chime 2 A. Butt It Came on well late after being held up on home turn, first night. Chance. 3 441 Million Dollar Fella 3 . . R. Brosnan It Kept up solid bat in front to distance a similar four-year-old field by four and a quarter lengths in 3:23.38 on first night. Could repeat. 4 2 Peek A 800 4 P. Hadfield It Second to Sheasea Bromac first-up at Reefton last Wednesday. 5 2607 Mizzen 5 R. Austin It Plugged away behind Million Dollar Fella and company on first night. Should be held again. 6 4020 Hickory Wood 6 .... C. de Filippi It Lost chance with gallop 600 m out at Motukarara last Monday. Capable of going close with peak run. 7 3533 Sterlo 7 R. D. Butt It Maintained consistent form with placing at Motukarara last Monday behind Willem Vink, after trailing over the last 1200 m. 8 4398 Taumutu Maid 8 It Found opposition in similar field on first night too strong. 9 41 Fiddler 9 M. de Filippi It Got up late after trailing at Motukarara in useful 2:57.3 (2200 m stand). Could go on with it.

10 3036 Lord Raja 10 P. Shand It Battled in similar line-up on first night. 11 568 Don Preston 11. ... J. Carmichael It First-up fifth this course last month his best run in three starts to date. 12 5427 Aznavour 12 R. Alfeld It Big finish late for second this course last month (maiden), then wilted at Motukarara after breaking early and moving up to be parked last 1000 m. 13 0210 Noble Eden 13 R. Cameron It Four lengths maiden winner in 3:21.8 (mobile 2600 m) here last month, but broke 800 m out when back on Friday. 14 2000 Rusticarno 14 D. G. Moore It Last raced early November when form poor. 15 2175 True Admiral 15 ..J. W. Smolensk! It Hutt Park winner last month which plugged from the third line in corresponding race on first night. 16 1089 Personality Pete 16 R. Dunn It Wilted in similar line-up on first night. Healy It No luck from awkward draws in recent outings. Could place from this marble. 3 2902 Lord Morano 3 G. Lane It Battled on behind Peter Lynn on first night after moving up in open last 1200 m. Should go close. 4 3060 Silver Trace 4 G. O'Reilly It First run since September and now with David Butt at West Melton. Could go well fresh. 5 361 Ar Jays Dream 5.... L. Mathieson It Last-start Invercargill winner in 2:9 rate for 2700 m (stand). 6 4473 Dreams Come True 6 . . . . J. .Howe It Good finish for third to Peter Lynn, Lord Morano, on first night, after faring badly in draw. Has to be tough. 7 7 Glenmanda 7 It Now back with Colin de Filippi at Ladbrooks. First run since August and take on trust. 10 1484 Georgie Lobe!! 10 B. White It Fought on for fourth behind Peter Lynn and co. on first night, bettering 3:22 for his placing. Keep on side. 11 0900 Susan Kay 11 K. M. O’Reilly It Hard to have. 12 9608 Opening Night 12 ... . T. Trathen It Should be held on latest efforts. 13 5909 C-fStry 13 A. Butt It Latest efforts not encouraging but reinsman will carry a fair amount of support. 15 468 Women’s Lib 15 R. Austin It Form fair but draw a disadvantage. 16 1076 Katiki 16 V. Keen It Winner in 3:22.51 (mobile 2600 m) this course last month and plugged on from similar draw on first night. Scratched: Exposure, Kea Rio, Nellie Dunloe. Skinner It Capable southerner with last-start 1:59.5 mile win at Winton, but could still find this a bit rich. 2 0088 Aran Blaze 2 It Usually reserves her best efforts for miles at Addington, so worth including as a trifecta prospect from this draw. 3 3211 Victoria Star 3 L. Hilliard It Last season’s top three-year-old filly with last-start 2:00 mile win at Auckland. Drawn to go well. 4 6625 Nardin’s Belle 4 It Good third to Frangelico in this last year. Dunn It Comes into the outside of the front line with the emergencies out, which poses problems. Capable of a merry mile but will need luck. 8 4110 Iffy Tryax 8 B. Borcoskie It Beat only three in this race last year and should be held again.

9 512 Bionic Chance 9 ... .M. de Filippi It Top mare with 1:58.7 mile as juvenile and career best of 1:58.3. Speedy and tuned for this. 10 2433 Gina Rosa 10 .... J. W. Smolensk!
