Pringle hits Auckland to victory over Wellington

PA Auckland Man of the match, Martin Pringle, is philosophical about his failure to make Auckland’s Shell Trophy side for this week’s South Island tour — even after a slashing batting display at Eden Park yesterday. Pringle hit a powerpacked 50 in Auckland’s easy win over Wellington in the last round of the Shell Cup series, but it wasn’t enough to book him a seat South.

“I didn’t think I’d make the side in the first place,” he said. “To have any chance I’d have probably needed 70, 80 or a hundred.

“You’re always disappointed when you miss out though.” Pringle and fellow opener, Derek Scott, have been dropped in a line-up which sees the recall of Trevor Franklin. But it was Pringle who showed the way yesterday with seven fours, and two sixes in his half century, coming off 52 balls. Wellington scored 154 for 8 off the 50 overs, surpassed by Auckland with 40 balls remaining and six wickets in hand. Auckland lost Scott early, falling to the Wellington wicketkeeper, Ervin McSweeney, off the bowling of Jonathan Mill-

mow with the score on 21. Pringle kept the runrate ticking over and with Allan Hunt striking the ball well, Auckland had 37 on the board after 10 overs. WELLINGTON R. Vance c Hunt b De Groen 3 B.
