Canty B scores outright victory

Canterbury B took another big stride towards winning the national second XI cricket title for the third successive season when it gained maximum points from its match against Central Districts B at Hagley Oval yesterday. Canterbury B's substantial first innings of 326, 124 more than that of Central Districts, was mainly because of two magnificent centuries, by the opening batsman, Blair Hartland, and by the former Shell series representative, Peter Kennedy. The pair contributed 207 towards the total and the only other score above 20 was extras. Central Districts might have hoped for something better when it had Canterbury B six down for 187, but Kennedy and Steve McNally added 78 for the eighth wicket to assure Canterbury of a healthy lead. The most successful Central Districts bowler, was Roger Stachurski, who toiled long and hard for his five wickets, and

the most economical. The captain, Gary Walton, featured in the team’s batting in the second innings. After the Canterbury spinners, Andrew Nuttall and David Hartshorn, had removed the first six batsmen — the same pair had taken five wickets each in the first innings — Walton and the tailenders resisted stubbornly to make Canterbury B bat again.
