Musical protest against demolition

PA Auckland The singer, Grant Chilcott, joined other entertainers making a musical protest yesterday against the planned demolition of His Majesty’s Theatre in Auckland. The leader of the group Wentworth Brewster, said people were "sick and tired” of seeing Auckland’s historic buildings destroyed to create mirror-glass towers. “If His Majesty’s goes, Auckland will lose its only mid-range venue for touring shows and bigger cabaret acts," Mr Chilcott said. He said he felt a special affinity for old buildings because he lived in the

historic Courtville Apartments. They were to be auctioned and faced possible development like His Majesty’s until the sale was stopped by a High Court injunction in October. The musical protest was organised as part of a 24hour picket at the theatre by the Stage Employees’ Union. One of the picket leaders, Hugh Ferguson, said the action would continue this week despite the property’s owner, Pacer-Kerridge, not having a demolition permit. Approval to clear the site cannot be gained until the Auckland City Council offices reopen on January 5.
