Council ban on man in park
One of Christchurch’s characters, George Patrick Shannon, is no longer welcome in Hagley Park. A trespass notice was issued on Wednesday and several members of the police and park staff have been given copies. “Whoever sees Mr Shannon first is to give him a copy,” said the curator of the Botanic Gardens, Mr Warwick Scadden. The notice bans Mr Shannon from entering North Hagley, South Hagley, and Little Hagley Parks, and the Botanic Gardens. The document cites littering, damage to public property, and “fouling of the premises,” as the grounds for the ban. Mr Scadden said the decision to issue the trespass notice, which would result in Mr Shannon’s arrest should he breach it, was reached after detailed discussions with the police. Mr Scadden said he had in the past instructed staff to ask those spending a night in the park if they wanted to be taken to the Anglican City Mission. Those who wanted to go ■ were taken. “We were taking the same people back every night.”
