Two Christmas babies
Christmas Day will be a constant reminder of family birthdays for two Christchurch mothers who gave birth to sons yesterday. The city’s first Christmas baby was -born at 2.57 a.m. in Christchurch Women’s Hospital to Nicola and Christopher Adair. Their baby, Matthew Ryan, weighed 2.9 kg at birth. In the afternoon at 3.05 a son, Richard Nicholas
Blair, was born at the hospital to Gaynor and Steven Blair. He weighed 3.17 kg. While the two mothers were resting yesterday, maternity wings in other hospitals in the city and Canterbury remained quiet up to late last evening. . No babies were expected at either Burwood, St George’s or Rangiora Hospitals.
A spokeswoman at the Southern Cross Trust Hospital said it was closed over the 'holidays until January 13, so staff were “definitely not expecting any babies.” Several mothers were overdue at Lincoln Hospital, but none were in labour. Staff at Kaikoura Hospital were expecting one birth, which had not eventuated last evening.
