Rakaia River flood notice

A warning was issued late last evening after fears the Rakaia River would flood. The North Canterbury Catchment Board issued the warning shortly after 10 p.m. after 75mm of rain fell in the river’s catchment in the previous 15 hours. The river was rising at the gorge and flood waters were expected to take about eight hours to get to the lower reaches. Occupants of the Rakaia Huts were being told last evening of the warning in case an evacuation was needed today. The police said the settlement was protected by stopbanks and no great fears were held. The seriousness of the flood would depend on whether heavy rain continued overnight. People were warned to stay away from the Rakaia riverbed.
