Jaguar confers Cup entry
Special correspondent Auckland For the connections of several runners in today’s main handicap at Ellerslie there could be much more to the result than the very worthwhile $62,500, $20,000 and $lO,OOO first, second and third prizes. Two of the horses in the field for the Jaguar Plate, formerly the Queen Elizabeth Handicap, are on the fringe, yet, of the DB Auckland Cup on New Year’s Day. Another two are quite a fair way off, it seems, from getting a start in the big one but could do so by making showings in today’s race. . The Jaguar Plate is one of two earlier events during the summer carnival which are able to provide automatic entry into the Cup. All first three home, if acceptors for the Cup, will be guaranteed a start and the first two in the Nathans Memorial on the second day, next Tuesday, will also be exempt from any Cup ballot. The two “fringe” horses in the Jaguar Plate, in respect of the Cup, are Dungarvan and Melody Moss though as equal 18th on the Cup list, with Starline, they would seem pretty certain to make the final field which will be limited to that number. Cure ran well in the Lion Avondale Cup, when fifth. She has the ability to win this one and go well, also, in the Cup. Sea Swift, a six-year-old mare from Ashburton, looked a solid stayer when fourth in the Lion Avondale Cup.
