Paid lifeguard patrols began on Canterbury beaches yesterday and will continue throughout the summer. Nineteen guards will cover the beaches between Waikuku and Taylors Mistake for eight hours every week-day. They will also patrol Woodend Beach at the week-end. The other beaches will be patrolled by volunteer lifeguards at the week-end. The volunteer patrols began last month.
