Christmas story given life
Christmas services usually require a soft-lit approach that lends life to clay and allows imagination to illuminate the Christmas story. Not so this year at the annual Children’s Christmas Service in Christchurch Cathedral. Those who go along to the service tomorrow at 3 p.m. will find this year’s “Mary” is indeed an expectant mother, Mrs
Penny Hubert, and her husband will be Joseph. Live animals, among them a pig and a donkey from the Willowbank Wildlife Reserve will feature in the Christmas story. The Christchurch Repertory Theatre has lent masks from its production of George Orwell’s "Animal Farm,” which are in turn being used to add a further
touch of realism as the scene focuses on Jesus’ birth in a manger amongst animals. The Dean of Christchurch, the Very Rev. Dr David Coles, yesterday said that he expected the Cathedral to be "packed” for the service as families come to sing carols and see the Christmas story before continuing their last-minute Christmas shopping.
Among other events at the Cathedral this week will be carol recitals by the Cathedral choristers today at 1.10 p.m. and tomorrow at 12.10 p.m. There will be a recital of Christmas music by the full Cathedral Choir on Christmas Eve at 7.30 p.m., while thousands of people are bringing toys to place under the tree, for distribution by the Save the Children Fund.
