The police fear people may be casing city banks after a man was held up and robbed of $2OO by the Bridge of Remembrance at 3 p.m. last Friday. Detective SeniorSergeant Colin Dalzell said the man had withdrawn the money from a Trustßank in Cashel Street and walked down the City Mall when he was approached by two people. “Something was held against his back, which we believe was a knife and he was told to hand over his holiday pay or he’d get it,” Detective Senior-Sergeant Dalzell said. The man was unable to give a description of the offenders or the weapon. Detective SeniorSergeant Dalzell said it was quite likely the offenders had been watching the bank to see which customers were making withdrawals. • An inmate who escaped from Paparua Prison last Friday was believed to be drinking in an inner city tavern later that day. Peter John Regan, aged 25, failed to return to the prison at 6 p.m. from day release. An unconfirmed sighting reported Regan drinking an an inner city hotel, at 8.30 p.m. on Friday. Regan is 165 cm tall, of medium build with black hair and green eyes. The police say he should be treated with caution. • A woman who was woken on Sunday by tapping on her bedroom window discovered her kit-

chen curtains had been set on fire. The woman was asleep in her Humbolt Street home, Waltham, at 10 p.m. when she heard tapping on her window. She ignored it but the noise was repeated so she got out of bed and discovered her kitchen curtains were on fire. They had been set alight through an open window. - The fire, which caused minor damage, is being investigated by the police. • A man armed himself with a heater after his girlfriend noticed an intruder in her Colombo Street home early on Sunday morning. The woman woke at 4 a.m. and saw a man standing in the lounge looking at the video and stereo. She woke her boyfriend, who picked up a heater and went out to confront the intruder. When he reached the lounge the man had left through the kitchen door. He' was described as a male, Caucasian, about 183 cm tall of thin build in his early 20s with shoulder length brown hair. He was wearing demin jeans and a jacket with an insigna on the back. • A woman had her waterbed emptied inside her Ferry Road flat and then stolen overnight on Saturday. The woman, who had been preparing to move out of the flat returned home at 2.15 a.m. on Sunday and found it had been ransacked. A queen-size Charisma Kensington waterbed worth $3OOO had been drained inside the room

and removed along with a tallboy and duchesse and a Pioneer mini stereo system, worth $9OO. • A woman disturbed an intruder in her neighbour’s house in Burke Street, Addington, on Friday afternoon. A male Maori in his late teens or early 20s had forced open the front door of the house. When he was disturbed he left on a red 10-speed bicycle fitted with a white child carrier. He was wearing blue shorts and a green or blacktop. r • Nothing had been taken from the house.’.' :; • A man who saw a burglar leaving a shop in Addington carrying a cash register chased him in his car without success early yesterday morning. The burglar, a male Maori, escaped in a stolen car. The man was on his way to work at 2.30 a.m. when he saw the burglar leaving the Bookworm Shop, in the Addington Mall, in Lincoln Road. He parked his car alongside the burglar’s vehicle but he was still able to get into it from the passenger’s door. The burglar drove off at high speed with jio lights. He was chased by the man but evaded him in Burke Street. The burglar had dropped the cash register but was believed to have taken several soft toys. He was described as in his early 30s, 180 cm tall with a “slight” moustache. He was driving a 1974 white Avenger, registration H 54779, which had been stolen.
