Festival backing
A council grant of $lOO,OOO towards re-estab-lishment of the Christchurch Arts Festival was recommended by the policy and finance committee yesterday. The Mayor, Sir Hamish Hay, said the grant would enable planning for a festival in two years time to be given by the organ-
isers. Cr John Burn said Christchurch was close to losing its arts festival altogether. "I think we’ve got to face up to giving a one-off very generous grant." Consideration would be given later to ■ annual grants, the committee decided.
