Marine emergencies which develop to a critical stage before qualified rescue services are notified are concerning the police and the New Zealand Coast Guard Federation. The federation’s executive officer, Mr Michael Grace, said there seemed to be a belief that a cost was involved, “but this is not the case.” In most' instances the first point of' contact should be the police who would then call the search and rescue service, he said. "Time is a very precious element in emergencies and people should not wait around wondering what to do before they call for help,” Mr Grace said.
