GARY BIRKETT
The All White soccer international, Mike McGarry, is aiming to play for Christchurch in the 1988 national league, commuting from Dunedin to turn out for the league champion. f P . McGarry, aged; 22, whose club, Dunedin City, withdrew from! the national league last Week, has already talked?. with the Christchurch ■, Coach, lan Marshall. / > He said yesterday that his number one. aim was to play for Christchurch and, if the club decided it wanted him, he expected
to sign beford Christmas.
Mr Marshall confirmed that McGarry had been approached but declined to comment further.
McGarry, who can play up front or in midfield, said he had not been talking with any other clubs. He wants to continue living in Dunedin, where he has just got a teaching job at Otago Boys’ High School, but admitted he needed to play in the national league if he wanted to keep his place in the All Whites.
“Playing in the travelling league would prob-
ably cost me my place in the New Zealand side. If I could be sure that I would not lose my place I would play for Dunedin City. But I think you have to face the higher standard of competition.” Meanwhile, it appears that the All White defender, Ceri Evans, will not be with Christchurch next year. Evans started work at Auckland Hospital five days ago and while he is keen to commute for games next season it appears that work commitments will force him to sign for an Auckland club.
