Services to seek ’copter funds

PA Wellington Friday has been named Peter Button Memorial Day by Wellington’s emergency services, which will stage an appeal and parade to raise funds for a revamped helicopter rescue service. The appeal to provide a rescue helicopter has already raised more than $35,000 and was organised along with the parade by the Life Flight Trust, the group established several months ago to run Wellington’s helicopter rescue The trust has had to rethink its original plans after the death of the rescue helicopter-service founder, Peter Button, in an accident on November 20. A trust spokesman, Bill Day, said that providing a helicopter, complete with rescue equipment and pilot for a round-the-clock service, would cost about $500,000 a year. Studies overseas had shown that saving 2.5 lives a year was enough to justify that expense in terms of gross national product saved. Mr Day said the service would\ be co-ordinated with Wellington’s other emergency services, such as fire and ambulance.
