Bail granted
Bail was not opposed for a man accused of wilfully setting fire to the DB Gladstone hotel in Durham Street on Saturday knowing that danger to life was likely to ensue. Anthony Peter Roda, aged 23, a plastic worker, who appealed in the District Court yesterday is also charged with intentionally damaging two windows of the hotel. Judge Frampton remanded him on bail to December 21. Roda was ordered to report to the police three times a week. A duty solicitor, Mrs M. A. Grant, sought bail for the accused, a first offender, to enable him to see a solicitor, and, on the advice of the police, a doctor. FELL OFF TRUCK Compensation of $l4O was ordered to be paid by Susan Marie Walters who sold 19 Garfield coffee cups to workmates — part of a consignment of 125 which dropped off the back of a truck. Walters, aged 21, unemployed, was also fined $lOO after pleading guilty to stealing the 125 coffee mugs. Sergeant M. J. South said the mugs were in two boxes which fell off a truck in front of the defendant’s vehicle. She stopped, picked them up and put the boxes in her car. NO PLEA ENTERED No plea was entered by a 35-year-old housewife alleged to have sold cannabis. Shervl Louise Davies
(Mr E. Bedo), is charged with committing the offence on December 2. She was remanded to December 14. ASSAULT CHARGE Should bail be granted, police were concerned that Martin Alan Williams might interfere with the apprehension of a co-of-fender, said Sergeant South. Williams, aged 31, a joiner, is charged with assaulting a man with intent to avoid arrest for attempted theft, and possessing cannabis, on December 3. The charge relates to an incident at Sumner in which the complainant was injured with an axe handle after disturbing gtwo men on his property. Sergeant South said he did not know the present condition, or extent, of the complainant’s injuries. The Judge remanded the accused on bail to December 14 and ordered him to report daily to the police. OBSCENE EXPOSURE A fine of $3OO was imposed on a soldier earlier convicted of twice on the same day indecently exposing himself to female assistants in the Army garrison shop at Burnham Military camp. Christopher Charles Hunia, aged 22, committed the offences on November 19. Judge Frampton, on fining Hunia $l5O on each charge, said the exposure offences were at the lower end of the scale.
