Brighton tower
Sir, —Correspondents are properly rebuked by P. M. Williams (December 3) for neglecting to comment on Peter Beaven’s proposed tower for New Brighton. It has potential that Mr Beaven,
with typical modesty, has so far refrained from announcing. Those viewers sufficiently moved by protracted study of waves endlessly breaking might come up with a few stanzas of indifferent verse; others with a more scientific turn of mind could, if telescopes were provided (for a consideration), observe the biological experiments traditionally conducted in the sandhills to left and right. The viewing platform should also be furnished with a couple of telescopes pointing inland so that the habits of local week-end gardeners could be recorded to brighten up the gardening column. Mr Beaven claims that within two years the tower would break even. Given the amenities outlined above, I reckon that inside six months it would be showing a profit. — Yours, etc., W. A. SUTTON. December 5, 1987.
