Economic measures

Sir,—Rumours about possible Government finance measures could well be true. In retreating from an over-high standard of living, New Zealand must suffer some pain, though we may, in compensation, enjoy a higher quality of life. Higher GST and lower personal taxes will give greater incentives to save; there may be fewer Mercedes around, or meals out, and longer waits for the lounge suites, but these “hardships” are not to be compared with those of earlier times or other places. We may even be able to afford to give more in our role of brother’s keeper or of neighbours in the global village which the world is rapidly becoming. The move away from extreme capitalist greed is matched by the move from extreme Marxism towards the middle ground, as is happening in China, Russia, France and: even the United States where the Reagan counter-revolution is petering out. In New Zealand it takes the form of abandoning both traditional trade union socialism and the reactionary Right. — Yours, etc., : < VERNON WILKINSON; December 3, 1987. -
