Aust, prison escaper captured in Hamilton

PA Wellington A convicted armed robber who escaped from Pentridge Prison in Melbourne on November 17 was recaptured in Hamilton on Saturday. Dennis Mark Quinn, aged 27, a New Zealander, was arrested after a police raid on a Hamilton house about 4 a.m. on Saturday, the Hamilton police said. Quinn told the police he had been in New Zealand for two days, but declined to tell them how he had entered the country.

Although Hamilton was his home area, he had not been there for eight years. Quinn has been remanded in custody to Friday when Victorian detectives will seek his extradition. No other charges were being pressed, and no other people were being charged. Quinn used a hacksaw blade to cut through the bars of his cell in Pentridge’s B Division, then, escaped the complex by using a grappling hook

made from the metal of a chair to scale an outer wall. He had been transferred from the prison’s maximum security Jika Jika Division 17 days earlier. Jika Jika inmates, including some of Victoria’s most notorious criminals, were re-housed elsewhere in the jail after the division was closed after the deaths of five inmates in a fire they started as a protest over prison conditions
