Fijian T.U.C. queries Govt.
NZPA-AAP Suva The Fiji Trades Union Congress will seek clarification from the new civilian Government on the position of unions in proposed tax-free zones here, authoritative sources said yesterday. The previous military government announced plans for the zones last month as an incentive for investors, but said unions would not be allowed to function in them.
The congress last week wrote to the then Minister of Labour and Industrial Relations, Taniela Veitata, saying it would resist the ban “with all the means available.” Such a ban would be “repugnant” to the trade union movement inter-
nationally, said the congress secretary, James Raman.
In this case, exports from the tax-free zones might not be allowed to enter some countries.
Trade union activity in Fiji was allowed to resume by the military Government as one condition of Australian and New Zealand unions lifting threatened cargo bans between their countries and Fiji after the second military coup in September.
The tax-free zones question is expected to be one of the first to be addressed by the new Labour and Industrial Relations Minister after the appointment of the new civilian Cabinet this week.
