Nathu to play in capital

Anup Nathu, relegated to the Canterbury B team this year after three seasons in the Canterbury A team, will play his club cricket in the capital from next weekend in a bid to win a place in the Wellington Shell Trophy team. Nathu confirmed last evening that he would be playing for Kilbirnie, his old club team, from next week-end and that he would be commuting from Christchurch each week-end.

Originally from Wellington, Nathu came to Christchurch to seek a place as an opening batsman in the Canterbury Shell Trophy team. In the 1984-85 and 198589 seasons he met with reasonable success scoring a century each season in Shell Trophy games but he has been unable to hold his place as an opener this season. Those places have been taken by Justin Boyle and the newly appointed captain, David Dempsey.

Nathu said that he did not have to fulfill any residential qualifications to be selected for Wellington. “I was born in Wellington so I am able to travel backwards and forwards and play for the Wellington team if I am selected.” He said he looked into the residential qualification aspect closely before making his decision to play in the capital.

•Nathu was uncertain whether he would play the remainder of the club season in Wellington or whether he would return to Wellington permanently.

“I will wait and see; what happens but I have' always intended to return to Wellington at some stage.” He said he had spoken to members of the Woolston club for whom he plays in Christchurch and they were happy for him to play in Wellington.

I Nathu’s highest score for Canterbury was in the 1985-88 season when he made 153 against Central Districts. The previous season he compiled another commendable total, 147 against Otago.
