Spreydon opens new pavilion
Spreydon’s bowlers and tennis players have a new pavilion, two and a half years after vandals broke in and burned down their old club rooms. Club members raised funds by debentures or loans to allow the building to go ahead, and the pavilion has now been officially opened by the Mayor of Christchurch, Sir Hamish Hay. The 71-year-old wooden building was broken into at Easter, IMS, and the burglars then set fire to IL The insurance company believed it was repairable and assessed the damage at SBMW, according to the Spreydon Bowling Club presidenL Mr Barry Hegarty. The clubs decided to pull down the rest of the building and raise the extra money, more than SIH,9H that was needed to rebuild in Concrete and iron. No-one was ever caught for the arson, he said.
As well as new tennis club rooms, the new building is an extension to the bowling club’s lounge, which was built about 14 years ago and was undamaged in the fire-,
