The total quantity of cargo handled through the port of Lyttelton for the first month of the board’s financial year was 18 per cent above the equivalent month last year. The total was 262,882 tonnes, an increase of 41,009 tonnes on October, 1986, the board's deputy general manager told the trade and commercial development committee on Wednesday. Mr Peter Morgan said November was also likely to show a good tonnage with the large amount of dry bulk goods (mainly coal) being handled. He said there was likely to be a small decrease In tonnage in the medium term however, because of the sluggish nature of the economy, especially in manufactured goods and exporting.
