Summer Times
Summer Times began yesterday at 12.30 pm. in Cathedral Square. - It took somemusical; coaxing and cajoling before the sun broke through the clouds to set the mood for Christchurch 198788 Summer Times programme of activities. But the organisers of the sponsored Summer Times were anxious to launch the event in true Cantabrian style, filling the Square with the rumbustious sound of folk music, a capering court jester and a large crowd of lunchtime onlookers to enjoy a musical spectacular. While the tourists snapped photographs for the folks back home, a number of onlookers joined in impromptu displays of dashing reels and jigs. Lunchtime orators across the Square used their lungpower to fight the skirl of pipes as the St Andrew’s College Band injected some Scottish spirit into the proceedings, helped by a dash of the Irish from the folk music group, The Mulligans. Summer was a coming in as the crowd gradually warmed to the prospect of a programme of 40 activities to provide a sparkle for the holiday season.
