Judgment vindicated

PA • Auckland Takanini trainer, Trevor McKee’s, judgment proved spot on when he chose to run Stanley in the Paxus Plate at Ellerslie yesterday. McKee also had Stanley entered for the Argus Questar Sprint, but opted for the feature three-year-old event. "He was better in at the weights against the three-year-olds,” McKee said. “And besides, I didn’t have a rider for the other race.” McKee managed to secure Tony Allan for Stanley, and although he had to carry Ikg overweight he proved too strong for the topweight, Pikeson, in the first leg of the T.A.B. double. McKee picked Stanley out at the Waikato sales and paid $26,000 for him for the Australian Breeding Management syndicate. But in a private sale McKee bought him back and he is now owned by Aucklanders Ray and Connie Martin. Stanley has now won twice and been placed twice in his four starts this season, and McKee will give the Standaan gelding his chance in a major three-year-old event next year. Pikeson, carrying 57kg, was game in defeat but trainer Trevor Lawson has abandoned plans to run him in the Troy New Zealand Derby and will now keep the colt to sprinting after freshening him up. New Plymouth visitor, Queen High Noon, finished well down the outside of the track to finish third, 24 lengths behind Pikeson. *
