Benefits

Sir,—Concerning the reply (December 1) by Mr Cullen to the letter on unemployment benefits paid to married couples without children, my husband has been unemployed for eight months and, at the age of 56, is regarded as too old to be employed. Therefore, he will be on the unemployment benefit of $194.64 (present rate) for four years. This is a horrifying prospect as, even now, we are struggling to survive. People of this age with no prospects of employment should receive the full benefit as paid to those retiring voluntarily at 60. Surely there are many people of our age in this situation. Can we get the same help from the Department of Social Welfare as younger people with children, or are we the forgotten age group in the unemployment figures? — Yours, etc.,

(Mrs) D. A. MEIKLE. December 2, 1987.
