Open government
Sir, — The Labour Government’s commitment to open government seems to have been abandoned in the hurly-burly whirl of “progress.” Among other examples of Labour’s former commitment to open government are the following; the post-1984 election open-the-books cam-
paign, the revision of the Official Information Act which guarantees public access to Government and administration matters, especially the admittance to select committee hearings and, finally, the proposed referendum on constitutional matters and, more specifically, the Bill of Rights. It appears that the current executive Is committed to open government, but the Prime Minister’s actions, as reported by “The Press” (November 27), illustrate that the Government is acting contrary to its principles of open government Mr Lange declined to say what the nature of the economic package is to' be or when it is to be released. This blatantly non-open Government action should be dropped in favour of consultation and open decision-making or else a repeat of the Muldoon tyranny will be the result — Yours, etc., S. A.BLYTH. November 27,1987.
