Cattle prices boost sale

Buyers remained confident and kept prices firm to last week’s levels at yesterday's store stock sale at Addington, in spite of large numbers of animals offered for sale.

Several highlights in the cattle sale gave the market a sound tone.

The annual consignment of 2*£ year steers from the Mendip Hills station averaged at $525 and was in excellent condition. Some sales reached $556.

A line of 48 Hereford steers from R. G. Morris, Cheviot, was another feature of the adult steer sale with prices reaching $536.

Medium adult steers made $4BO to $5OO. Another mainstay of the cattle sale was a line of Mt Virginia station-bred Hereford breeding cows with calves at foot which sold at $604.

Some outstanding pens of yearling (15-month) steers were offered. A line of 12 Simmental steers from J. C. Hiatt, Cheviot, made $466.

Twelve Angus steers at the same age from D. M. and P. E. Wilding, Conway, made $454.

Most good yearling steers made $4OO to $420 with mediums making between $360 and $4OO. Small yearling steers made about $3OO.

Yearling heifers did not improve on last week’s prices with the best making $3OO to $330, mediums about $270 and above, and small heifers making $250 or more. Lamb prices saw little change with the top prices being $22 and $23 for Romneys. Top prices for other wool breeds were $l9 and $2O.

Down cross lambs were not so well sought after, making $l6 to $lB. Black faced lambs were not as popular as last week.

Some lines of small lambs met strong inquiry from buyers. The yardings were: lambs 12,807 (8216 last week), sheep 1200 (1647), and cattle 1850 (832). Sales included.—
