Changing with the times

N.C.R.’S Christchurch branch was, until recently, in premises at 205 Salisbury Street. With changing technology and the company’s move into electronic systems, they found they had too much space.

During the seventies the company was not enjoying its previous levels of success, as it made the difficult transition from mechanical systems to electronics. Today, N.C.R. have completed that transition, pioneering the world’s first 32 bit mi-

croprogrammable VLSI Processor Chip, and becoming one of the few computer companies with double digit growth figures. With the success of the new product lines has come the ability to upgrade their facilities. The new Christchurch offices bring the branch into line with N.C.R.’S New Zealand image.

With the choice of the corner of Madras and Salisbury Streets, the company feel they have gained a higher public

profile without inconveniencing customers who thought they knew where they were going only to find “we’ve moved” signs.

They also felt that the area needed a lift, and that an attractive building would encourage redevelopment nearby.

The design of the building reflects N.C.R.’S values in technology: organisation, integrity, intelligence, and a reliance on geometric shapes and linear compositions.
