Flounder and sole in short supply
Flounder and sole were in short supply on the fish market this week, probably because coastal winds meant that fishing boats could not get out to sea. One retailer said that sole were caught closer to shore than some varieties of fish, so that shortage may mean there had been bad weather just off shore. Sole were slightly more expensive, at $l2 to $l6 a kilogram, while flounders
fetched $6.50 to $B. The price Canterbury consumers pay for fish is usually determined by those on the export scene. Larger sole are currently selling for more than the smaller variety, although this can vary. Most prices were stable this week, with hoki at $6 to $7.50 a kilogram, warehou, $6.50 to $9 a kilogram, terakihi, $lO to $l2, and gurnard, $ll to $l3.
