Gurus in sequel

By

NEVIN TOPP

"Hayride To Hell, Part H — The Sequel” — that is Dave Faulkner’s appraisal of the Hoodoo Gurus’ New Zealand tour. The Australian band have finished a European tour, including supporting U2 in Britain, and they completed two tracks for a live 8.8. C. radio show. One of the tracks was a sequel to “Hayride To Hell,” “Mars Needs Guitars,” the song on the LP.

Billy and Charlie had to meet again, but the radio recording was a spontaneous thing, Faulkner said. The Australian band comes to New Zealand for its third New Zealand tour, and Faulkner, the band’s lead singer, has a soft spot for the country — especially as the band

is popular. The Hoodoo Gurus might also be one band that takes notice of what the fans say. Last time the Hoodoos played in Christchurch it was sardine time for the fans in a local hotel. “The fans were complaining that they could not move, so we decided we had better give them something better,” Faulkner said. This time the Hoodoos branch out by playing in the Town Hall auditorium on Tuesday evening. “So it’s going to be a bit more space and a healthier atmosphere.” (Faulkner is a nonsmoker). The recent tour in Europe and the latest tour of Australia and New Zealand have the Hoodoos

looking towards a wellearned three months off. Faulkner was considering the Mardl Gras in New Orleans, having just missed it last year while on tour in the United States. But the final date of a further short tour in Australia is the day before the highlight of the Mardi Gras, and he does not think he can get there in time. The Hoodoos are looking forward to their fourth album next year, although no decisions have yet been made on when, where, and who will do it The who being the producer. In the meantime, the group are going to take three months off. “We’re not going to see each other, speak to each other. We’re going to have a good time.”
