Book aims to help consumers
PA Wellington If you’ve wondered what the extra ingredients listed on the label of your favourite breakfast marmalade were, a booklet released recently should help. The booklet “What’s in It? A Guide to Identifying Food Additives” is being promoted by the Minister of Health, Mr Caygill, as introduction to a new sys-
tem of coding that will appear soon on packeted foodstuffs. Mr Caygill said manufacturers would soon follow a coding system used in Australia and Europe requiring additives in food to be identified by a code number or specific name. “Although regulations to put the new system into effect won’t be introduced
until next year, we’ve decided to release the booklet now because food labelled with additive numbers is already on supermarket shelves,” he said. The Retail Grocers and Supermarkets’ Association will help publicise the scheme and the booklet is available from Health Department and area health board offices.
