Tramper in 'copter detour

An R.N.Z.A.F. helicopter transporting a tramper, suffering from appendicitis, from Haast to Dunedin had to detour to Cromwell yesterday evening, when it ran low on fuel.

The helicopter had been helping with the search for the missing Christchurch tramper, Mr John Jackson, when it was called to lift the tramper out of the area.

The woman, who had been tramping on Mount Aspiring, was suffering from acute appendicitis and emergency services in Dunedin were put on standby for her arrival. During the journey the helicopter was forced to divert to Cromwell as it was low on fuel and the woman was admitted to Cromwell Hospital.

Her name and condition were not available last evening.
